本书简介
Foreign Language Teacher Education and Development – Selected Works of Renowned TESOL Experts highlights the works of a number of leading researchers and educators in the TESOL field, aiming to exemplify the diversity and complexity of the ELT field. World Englishes: Research and Practice brings together an impressive collection of representative works addressing critical issues in both theories and praxis in the field of world Englishes with a special focus on how Englihs is used as a lingua franca among Asian multilinguals for whom English is a learned or additional language.
Preface (excerpt)
Andy Kirkpatrick’s volume brings together an impressive collection of representative works addressing critical issues in both theories and praxis in the field of World Englishes (WE) that the author has devoted over 40 years of a successful career as a prominent scholar and researcher of WE. This book is comprised of eighteen carefully selected chapters covering two major sections: Section A: World Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca with ten chapters and Section B: Chinese Rhetoric with six chapters focusing on the extent (or not) that traditional Chinese rhetoric exerts on contemporary Chinese rhetoric and a historical comparison of “Western” and Chinese rhetoric. What is worth noting is the deep connection that Andy has had with Chinese society and the Chinese language. Growing up in a richly diverse multicultural and multilingual society in Malaysia (Malaya then) in 1950s, the author was used to code-mixing (now referred to as “translanguaging”) various languages including Malay, Hokkien, Cantonese and Malaysian varieties of English. Such a multilingual and multicultural environment sparked his curiosity in languages and his studies of Chinese literature and language in Fudan University. This, in turn, led to his interest in Chinese rhetoric and later expanding his passion in languages to scholarly work in World Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca while still keeping the study of traditional Chinese rhetoric as an academic “hobby” (as the author phrased it in his Introduction chapter).
In the final chapter (titled “Afterword”), the author outlines his prediction of several major trends in the development of English and Chinese as the two major Lingua Francas, along with profoundly thought-provoking questions for readers to ponder. It is clear that research into the way the world’s two major languages intersect, interact and influence each other is of crucial importance. Equally important is research into “how the increasing use of Chinese and English worldwide is influencing the use (or non-use) of other languages”. It is our hope that readers of this book will be inspired to explore and investigate these vital inquiries in the field of WE.
Professor Andy Kirkpatrick’s life-long concerted efforts and dedication to the field of WE and ELF have made all the difference to his own professional career as a respected scholar, but even more importantly, to the rise and spread of WE and ELF research and practice especially in Asia.
Like many ELT educators in the field, I have greatly benefited from reading and using his work over my teaching career. I am extremely honoured to have the opportunity to assist on this volume and present this collection of Kirkpatrick’s representative work to our readers in China and other parts of the world.
